Alprazolam treats anxiety and panic disorder. It is a short-acting benzodiazepine medication. Alprazolam acts on the brain and the central nervous system, producing a calming effect. The brand name for alprazolam is Xanax. It acts through the GABA receptors in the brain, which sends signals to the body. But the anxiety caused by everyday stress is usually not treated by this medication. Alprazolam (Xanax) can be habit-forming.

It’s an addictive medication so use it only when prescribed by the doctor. The Alprazolam tablets come both in immediate-release and extend-release form, and orally disintegrated structure as well. An oral solution of alprazolam is also available. The immediate-release alprazolam is used for the treatment of panic disorder and anxiety disorder, while extended-release alprazolam is used only for the treatment of panic disorder.

Alprazolam can also be used as a combinational therapy of treatment. The most adverse effects of alprazolam are drug abuse, dependence, depression, suicidal thoughts, respiratory depression, mental problems, movement problems, heart problems, liver problems, and coma.

Consult your doctor before taking the medication if you have kidney liver diseases, asthma or breathing problems, seizure or epilepsy, and a history of depression or alcohol addiction.Do not give alprazolam to pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, as it can cause severe withdrawal symptoms in the newborn baby.
