Alprazolam treats anxiety and panic disorder. It is a short-acting benzodiazepine medication. Alprazolam acts on the brain and the central nervous system, producing a calming effect. The brand name for alprazolam is Xanax. It acts through the GABA receptors in the brain, which sends signals to the body. But the anxiety caused by everyday stress is usually not treated by this medication. Alprazolam (Xanax) can be habit-forming.

It’s an addictive medication so use it only when prescribed by the doctor. The Alprazolam tablets come both in immediate-release and extend-release form, and orally disintegrated structure as well. An oral solution of alprazolam is also available. The immediate-release alprazolam is used for the treatment of panic disorder and anxiety disorder, while extended-release alprazolam is used only for the treatment of panic disorder.

Alprazolam can also be used as a combinational therapy of treatment. The most adverse effects of alprazolam are drug abuse, dependence, depression, suicidal thoughts, respiratory depression, mental problems, movement problems, heart problems, liver problems, and coma.

Forms Strength Immediate-release or regular-release tablets 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, and 2 mg. Orally disintegrating tablets 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, and 2 mg. Extended-release tablets 0.5mg, 1mg, and 2mg.

Alprazolam Dosage:

Take the alprazolam medication as prescribed by your doctor. For the treatment of anxiety disorder-

FORM STRENGTH
Oral immediate-release tablet 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg.
Orally disintegrating tablet 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg.
Oral extended-release tablet 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg, 3mg.

Adult Dosage:

FORM STRENGTH
Staring dose 0.25mg to 0.5mg two to three times a day
Dosage increase Every 3-4 days, reviewed by the doctor
Maximum dosage 4mg per day
Dosage Reduction 0.5mg every 3 days.

Child Dosage: Do not give this medication to children below 17 years of age.

Senior Dosage: 0.25mg given 2-3 times per day.

For Treatment of Panic Disorder

FORM STRENGTH
Oral immediate-release tablet 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg
Orally disintegrating tablet 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg
Oral extended-release tablet 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg, 3mg.

Adult Dosage:

Immediate-release tablets

FORM STRENGTH
Staring dose 0.5mg three times a day.
Dosage increase Every 3-4 days, reviewed by the doctor
Maximum dosage 10mg per day, in divided dosages
Dosage Reduction 0.5mg every 3 days.

Extended-Release Tablets:

FORM STRENGTH
Staring dose 0.5mg three times a day.
Dosage increase Every 3-4 days, reviewed by the doctor
Maximum dosage 10mg per day, in divided dosages
Dosage Reduction 0.5mg every 3 days.

Child Dosage: Do not give this medication to children below 17 years of age.

Senior Dosage: 0.25mg given 2-3 times per day. 0.5mg once a day for the extended-release tablets.

Overdose or prolonged use of alprazolam can also cause addiction or other adverse effects.

Do not take alprazolam if you have narrow-angle glaucoma or you are allergic to benzodiazepines. Consult your doctor before taking the medication if you have kidney liver diseases, asthma or breathing problems, seizure or epilepsy, and a history of depression or alcohol addiction.

Do not give alprazolam to pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, as it can cause severe withdrawal symptoms in the newborn baby.
